I absolutely love swimming. I am 100% convinced it is one of the best experiences in the world! I thrive on the feelings of joy and gratitude that sweep over me every time I immerse myself in a body of water.

I really want to share the joys of swimming with everyone, but part of the reason I decided to participate in Henley’s This Girl Can, is to show people who are often underrepresented in the swim world that they can join too. I want to share my love of swimming with every single Black and Brown person and tell them that there is plenty of space for you here. I want to shout out as loud as I can, that everyone, regardless of their race, culture, gender identity, religion, age, body shape and swim ability, that they too are entitled to the joys of swimming – whether that be indoors or outdoors.

You’ll find this trainee solicitor taking up space in both indoor and outdoor swim spaces. I love swimming at my local pool with swimmers who are returning to the water to improve their swim technique (that’s me) as well learners who are taking back their power and getting to grips with the water and all she has to offer. It’s empowering.

I feel I am my best self when I am swimming outdoors, dipping and diving as deep as my breath will allow. Swimming and surrounded by nature, I thrive. I am humbled too. Swimming the Henley mile will be a challenge, but the best kind. I anticipate growth on a physical, mental and spiritual level. The best thing is that I get to go on this journey with five other women who have their own stories to tell. I cannot wait to witness the small and big wins for all of us. I am ready for every splash, swim stroke and squeal of laughter on this incredible journey.

When I saw you from afar on a Montego Bay beach a few days ago, I immediately identified you as a fellow swimmer, which was confirmed as we began to converse. It takes one to know one! I rarely connect with a woman that looks like me who shares my passion for swimming. However, your shiny Grit far surpasses my passion hands down – an open mile swim in the Thames! Wow! I’ll be rooting for you and your 5 companions from North Carolina! Wishing you Every Blessing…

Well done Ms Black!Open water swimming is true joy but also pretty scary. I’ve only done two races before. I, too, am very proud of you and all your accomplishments. Rocking your natural hair vomit too , I see. Looking fabulous x

This is great news you’re an inspiration, just the other day I was thinking about getting back into swimming as it’s a great exercise for Toning the body and relaxing the mind. I am going to now look at my local bath and see if they have classes for me to attend.

Although I can swim from school I’m not a particularly strong swimmer so I’d like to perfect my technique.

I wish you and your five ladies God’s blessing and speed and I’m sure this adventure will be memorable
