Inspired by This Girl Can, a national campaign designed to get more women and girls active, we are once again giving away places in The Henley Mile on Sunday 9th July 2017.
Last year, all 5 of our inspirational and amazing ‘This Girl Can’ women completed the Henley Mile. One of them even swam it twice – once with a wetsuit and once without. They also regularly blogged about the run up to the event, from finding out they were winners to their feelings after the event. You can see their stories here.
For 2017 we would again like to give some places away to women aged 16+ who have never swum in an open water event before. We will help the women every step of the way, with advice about their training and their equipment and how best to transition from the pool to open water.
All we ask is that the winners keep a blog of their experience. We want to hear about everything. From the moment they commit to the event, to the second they cross the finish line. We want to hear about the days they didn’t want to get out of bed and the days they thought they could swim forever. We want to understand their feelings the first time they swim in open water, and most importantly the sense of pride when they achieve their goal.
And we hope that this small group of women will inspire others to get out and get active, either from witnessing our participants enthusiasm first-hand or through their blog, and to perhaps try something that they didn’t even know they would enjoy doing.
So if you are tempted, would like a chance to win one of our free places, and are willing to share your experiences with the world, click here to take you through to our entry form. There are a few questions about you, then you will be asked to write a couple of paragraphs describing why you want to participate, what is driving you to enter and how you feel you might inspire others.
Closing date for the competition is Sunday 19th March 2017

A message from Alison – 2016 This Girl Can Swimmer
“This time last year I had recently turned 60, was about to become a granny, and wanted a challenge to move my swimming skills in a new and ungrannyish direction. I had never swum in an organised event before, not even been in any race since the egg and spoon at infants school (when I came last) and was strictly a gentle pootler up and down the swimming baths kind of a person.
A friend sent me the link to This Girl Can Swim, and, glass of wine in hand, I sent in my application. I was amazed to get a slot, and had a really great few months training myself up, blogging about my progress and getting to know the other girls in the challenge.
The day itself was amazing, such energy in the air (and water) and the strangers I found myself swimming with were all so supportive. Getting into the river was not scary at all, and I loved both my swims (I did the Mile in wetsuit and then again without) and have carried on swimming regularly ever since in pools, lidos, the sea, a couple of lakes and a river.
I am fitter than I have ever been, my self confidence has had a real boost and I can’t wait to start baby swimming lessons with my lovely little grand daughter. “
This Girl Can is a national campaign designed to encourage more women and girls to get active. The campaign is funded by Sport England and the National Lottery.
